Conceived as a ‘resilience training simulation’, this short animation was designed in collaboration with the Future Laboratory to accompany their annual Trend Briefing report.
The report investigates three major themes: 'Resilience Culture’, ‘Uncoupled Living’ and ‘Programmable Realities’. We were commissioned to abstract and visualise the implicit risks and opportunities that come with each speculative future.
Resurrecting the Sublime
In collaboration with artist Dr Alexanda Daisy Ginsberg and her team, we shot footage of her studio in Somerset House London and edited a short film documenting her project to bring back the smells of extinct flowers.
The Middle Layer
Considered across three scales, from person, to city, to nation, this essay examines skin as media - the Latin term for ‘middle layer’ – and how in the media of today the layers and folds of what might be thought of as ‘one’ overlap, pluralise, and merge. We can no longer see the ends of our skins. Through waves, flows, and clouds, we have spread ourselves, merged ourselves, across the globe, and as the skins of our personhood stretch through time and space, so too have the skins of our cities, the skins of our nations, becoming thinner and more porous than we may expect.
Breath of Daedalus
The subterranean city Daedalus is carved deep into the chasms of Noctis Labyrinthus. It supports a dense population – of researchers and explorers – and a Martian proto-forest that releases oxygen and moisture into the lower atmosphere.
The Atlas of False Desires
The Atlas of False Desires tells the story of Desire Atlas - a ‘click-farm’ in India, who in 2020 are running a devious operation to manufacture trends through the strategic placement of fake content and viral followings in social media.
Through Leviathan's Eyes
This film is an optimistic, speculative glimpse into a world where reality is constructed collaboratively. The film is a non-narrative tour through a near-future condition of ‘cityness’ imagining a rewriting of technological priorities; turning the blinding drive for personalised reality into a truly mixed reality.
The Island of Made In
As we wander through the Island of Made In, we dive into the world hidden within our clothes and immerse ourselves into our own wardrobes.
Speculative design studio Superflux commissioned Inferstudio to compose and edit a short film that was presented to leading educators, designers, and policymakers as part of an experiential simulation about the future of work.
27 Years of Lazarian Delights
This work is the result of fantastical worldbuilding; artifacts from another solar system collected by an ambitious explorer who pursues a hedonistic thirst for novelty in a metaphorical journey of discovery, scientific observation, and ethnography.
Future Laboratory - Branded Cities
The Future Laboratory commissioned three animations to form the backdrop of their presentation at SXSW 2018, examining potential urban futures and the role corporations and governments could play in shaping the structure and functioning of cities.
After the Fire
Commissioned to visualise this innovative and environmentally-aware Australian country home, we chose to depict the building in its bush setting at a time of regeneration - after the power of an Australian fire.
Written for the 2016 Architectural Fairytales Competition, in this work we experiment with the role of fantasy as a tool of emotional engagement, presenting two complimentary fantasies woven together in a tale of destruction, resilience, and hope.
A proposal for the Geneva Development Challenge, Vital Networks is a speculative proposal for a system of international telemedicine, designed to improve development outcomes and the availability of care in poorer countries, while also delivering services to patients in OECD countries in a more efficienc and cost-effective manner.
